On-Page SEO Checklist for Business Websites
Most business websites lose search visibility to small, fixable issues rather than big strategic mistakes: missing titles, duplicate descriptions, slow images or pages Google cannot find. This on-page SEO checklist for business websites walks through what to check on every important page.
Work through it page by page, starting with your home page and main service pages. You do not need to be a developer for most of it, though a few items need access to your site's settings or code.
Titles, meta descriptions and headings
The title tag is the clickable headline in Google's results and one of the clearest signals of what a page is about. The meta description is the short summary underneath; it does not directly affect rankings, but a good one earns more clicks.
Each page should also have one H1 that clearly states the topic, followed by H2 and H3 headings that break the content into logical sections. Write headings for people first: 'Our Services' tells a reader very little, while 'Physiotherapy for Sports Injuries in Bengaluru' tells them and Google exactly what to expect.
- A unique title for every page, with the main keyword near the start
- Titles kept roughly within 60 characters so they are not cut off
- Your brand name and, for local pages, your city or locality
- Meta descriptions of about 150 characters that explain the benefit
- No duplicate titles or descriptions across pages
- One H1 per page, with a logical H2 and H3 structure beneath it
URLs and internal links
Clean, descriptive URLs are easier to understand and share. Use lowercase words separated by hyphens, keep them short and avoid dates or random numbers unless they serve a purpose.
Internal links connect your pages and pass relevance between them. Link from your home page to key services, from service pages to related services and industry pages, and from blog posts to the service they support. Use descriptive anchor text such as 'website maintenance plans' rather than 'click here'.
- Every important page is reachable within a few clicks of the home page
- No orphan pages without any internal links pointing to them
- No broken internal links or links pointing to redirected URLs
Images and alt text
Images are often the heaviest part of a page. Compress them, use modern formats such as WebP where possible, size them to the space they fill and lazy-load images further down the page.
Add alt text that describes what each image shows. It improves accessibility for people using screen readers and gives search engines useful context. Describe the image naturally and do not stuff keywords into it.
File names matter a little too. A photo named 'clinic-reception-koramangala.jpg' is more meaningful than 'IMG_4821.jpg', and it takes only a moment to rename images before uploading them.
Schema markup
Schema is structured data that helps search engines understand your content and can make your listings eligible for richer results. For most business websites, a few types cover the essentials. Validate your markup with Google's Rich Results Test after adding it.
- Organization or LocalBusiness schema on the home or contact page
- Service schema on key service pages
- FAQPage schema where you have genuine questions and answers
- BreadcrumbList schema to show your site structure
- Article schema on blog posts
Speed, Core Web Vitals and mobile
Google uses page experience signals, including Core Web Vitals, as part of how it evaluates pages. These measure how quickly the main content loads, how responsive the page is to taps and clicks, and how stable the layout is while loading.
Since most searches happen on mobile, test every key page on a real phone, not just a desktop browser. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are easy to tap and nothing overflows the screen.
- Compress images and remove unused scripts and plugins
- Use caching and a reliable host
- Avoid layout shifts from late-loading banners, pop-ups or fonts
- Check real-user data in the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console
Sitemap, robots.txt and Search Console
An XML sitemap lists the pages you want indexed, and robots.txt tells crawlers which areas to avoid. Make sure the sitemap only contains live, indexable pages and that robots.txt is not accidentally blocking important sections.
Verify your site in Google Search Console and submit the sitemap. Check the pages report for anything excluded or showing errors, use URL inspection after publishing new pages, and watch the performance report to see which searches bring visitors to you.
Content that answers real questions
Technical fixes help Google read your pages, but content is what earns rankings and enquiries. Each service page should explain what you offer, who it is for, how it works, where you serve and what the visitor should do next.
Write in plain language, answer the questions customers actually ask on calls and WhatsApp, and update pages when your services change. Thin pages with a few lines of generic text rarely rank, however well they are tagged.
Trust signals belong in your content as well. Clear contact details, real photos of your team and work, and honest descriptions of your process all help visitors decide, and they make your pages more useful than a competitor's generic copy.
